Education helping put inmates back on track

Prison plus education equals no more prison -- at least that's the formula Tooele County Detention Center officials are banking on as they continue to encourage inmates to get GEDs and high school diplomas while behind bars. "Of the people who graduate while in custody, very few re-offend," said Jail Commander Lt. Jerry Mora. "Now they have more opportunities, now they have a better job. There's nothing wrong with delivering pizzas. A job is a job. But you can't afford to support a wife and a family on that. That's why they were out selling drugs. Now they can actually afford to take care of their families. They are coming out ahead."

Council approves $44.7 million budget

The Tooele City Council adopted a $44.7 million budget for the 2008-09 fiscal year Wednesday night that requires the city to dip into its reserves to make up the difference between stagnant revenues and increasing expenditures. The budget calls for the city to draw $1.5 million from its fund balance reserve to balance the general fund, which is budgeted at $14.5 million for the year ahead. The city's revenues are projected to decrease by 2.6 percent over last year's budget, while expenditures will rise 8 percent compared to last year.

"Marci Wicks with Tooele Outreach introduced me to Ann Marie Fuller and my whole world changed," Bush said. Fuller, 28, of Grantsville, who was named Volunteer of the Year for 2007 by the Tooele City Police Department, has always had a deep love for animals and wanted to get involved, but wasn't sure what to do.

First of two big demoltion derbies slated

Crashing into other cars and creating mayhem for other drivers is the name of the game this Saturday at the Deseret Peak Demolition Derby. Gates open at 4 p.m. and the extreme contact sport begins at 6 p.m. at the motorized arena at Deseret Peak Complex. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children.
