Tooele County Weed Board offers help in controlling weeds
Written by
5/15/2008

Landowners with county noxious weeds -- weeds listed on official county noxious weed list -- can borrow spray equipment and receive free herbicide to treat the affected acres. Annual weed control and weed sprayer calibration workshops are part of the program as well. All that is asked of participants in the program is that they keep a record of acreage monitored and treated and that they read and follow label directions. For more information call Jerry Caldwell at 843-3459. Homeowners with less than one acre of land can call the extension office at 277-2407 for recommendations about lawn and garden weed control.

Sometimes life throws curveballs at even your best plans
Written by Darla Jones
5/15/2008

One morning last week, my husband and I were making spontaneous plans to go into Salt Lake. Before going, however, he wanted to run the sprinklers for the first time this season. You know, dampen the grass a little; smell the fragrance of wet cement; get ready for the first mow.

All men know who is really in charge of the household
Written by Jamie Gross
5/8/2008

Again, to reiterate, I know that my wife is really in charge, but she is great at letting me think I have some control and even lets me be the token figurehead so I look like I am in charge to the outside world. I love to borrow the great idea from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" of I am the head of our household, but my wife is the neck.

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE: Family budgets can be extremely hard, especially with fancy, expensive razors
Written by Darla Jones
4/24/2008

Another item that must be included in a family budget is dog food, because, after all, dogs are a (hu)man's best friend. Unconditionally, they shed their love on the carpet and couches and pretty much get full reign of the backyard. They slobber and protect and completely make themselves at home. And, if you haven't already figured it out, canines also are privy to their own food -- commonly packaged in huge 220-pound bags that last about two weeks and, in transport may earn you an unplanned trip to your friendly neighborhood chiropractor.

FAMILY TIES: Tooele City program aims to help with communication between parents, kids
Written by Milo Berry
4/24/2008

GGC is a community resource that offers great ideas and strategies for parents of all families with children 9 to 15 years of age. This age range is a unique period when many youth report regular alcohol use, especially starting in the seventh or eighth grades. These workshops are able to "hit the alcohol nail right on the head." GGC sessions take a strong proactive approach and are noted for success and positive outcomes. They are successful because they provide both youth and parents with powerful skill sets that can prepare teens to resist alcohol, tobacco and other drugs at a period in life when there is enormous pressure to experiment. In turn, parents learn how to communicate with and support their children in this effort to resist unhealthy offers. Simply put, this parenting system is as good as it gets for the average family trying to keep their kids on the right path.
