Seeking nominations

The Tooele County Healthy Marriage Coalition is seeking nominations for outstanding marriages in Tooele County. Please nominate a couple you know. Categories include: golden marriage, longest married happy couple, newlywed award, valorous military marriage. Please include your contact info, couple's contact info, explanation why they should receive the award, and other info about how their marriage is happy in your submission. Healthy Marriages Valentine event

It will soon be February, which means Valentine's Day is approaching. The Tooele County Healthy Marriages Coalition is sponsoring a Valentine celebration dinner on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 6 p.m., at the Eagles Nest. Cost is $30/couple. Prime rib dinner will be served. In addition to dinner, each couple will receive materials valued over $20. Space is limited so RSVP and pre-pay today. Call 277-2400 to reserve your spot.

Cinco de Mayo committee

It's time to start planning for the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration and we need some help. We are currently seeking individuals who can assist in planning for this year's celebration. Proceeds from this event will go toward fighting domestic violence. If you are interested please contact Robert Herrera Jr. at 849-2698.

Family Valentine's Dance

Tooele City Family Recreation and the Tooele Boys and Girls Club are sponsoring the second annual Family Valentine's Dance on Friday, Feb. 8, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Tooele High School. This is a free event for families of all ages. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Family photographs will be taken by a professional photographer and will be available for purchase. Volunteers needed

The Children's Justice Center is in need of volunteers and their dogs for the Healing Paws program. The dogs will be required to take the training and pass the test. Training begins next week. Contact the CJC at 843-1161 for more information.

Oranges

Caregiver Guide classes

The U-Care Caregiver Guide Classes are held every third Tuesday of the month, to help you to provide hand-on training to better care for your loved one. Our next class will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. at the Tooele Senior Center. The classes this month is on community supports for remaining in the home. Light refreshments will be served. Homeless Count

Tooele County is participating in the statewide homeless count. Anyone who is homeless on the night of Thursday, Jan. 31 needs to be included in the count. If you are homeless, or know someone who is, please make sure they contact Tooele County Relief Services or they Food Bank between Feb. 1 and 8. Call 830-7953 or stop by the Food Bank, 83 S. Main St.

Cub Scout Roundtable

Cub Scout Leader Roundtable will be held Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m., at the Tooele Jr. High School. We will cover the March theme: Litter to Glitter. Don't miss an opportunity to meet and network with other cub scout leaders. We will also have leader training information available.

Community health clinic

A community health clinic workshop will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. at 225 S. 100 East, Tooele (the building next to the old hospital). Everyone is welcome. Free flu shots will be provided by Mountain West Medical Center.

Schools

Johnsen Community Council

The Clarke N. Johnsen Jr. High School Community Council will be meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m., in the office conference room. All interested parents and community members are welcome.

THS UBSCT test

The UBSCT test will be held Feb. 5, 6 and 7. Tooele High School will have an altered schedule and there will be two bus runs that day. Students who are testing (all sophomores, and juniors and seniors who have not yet taken or passed all three sections of the UBSCT) should report to school at 7:40 a.m. Room assignments for sophomores will be posted at the counseling office and main office windows. Juniors and seniors should receive a letter in the mail with their room assignments. All other students (freshmen, and juniors and seniors who have passed all three sections of the UBSCT) should report to school at 9:55 a.m. First and fifth periods will start at 10:05 on those days. Make up days for testing will be held during the regular school day on Feb. 8, 11 and 12. For more information, please call Mrs. Swan at 833-1981.

Story time

Remember children's story time every Wednesday at 11 a.m. and children's crafts each Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. Check with the library for any special story times or other special events that come up. Valentine's game

Join in the fun with our "Hearts that Love are Always in Bloom" game. Just circle all of the hearts in the picture and get a prize. This game is for children ages 3 to 6, and will begin Feb. 1, and run through Feb. 20.

History game

Test your knowledge of presidential history with our game of "Do you know your presidents?" beginning Feb. 1, and run through Feb. 20. There will be pictures of presidents and some facts to help you figure out who it is. When you think you know the answer, bring your sheet to the front desk and receive your prize. Pictures will change, just for fun and a challenge. This game is for ages 7 through 12.

Free financial seminar

Our free financial seminar will be taxing social security on Feb. 7, at 6 p.m., presented by H&R Block.

Adult Education

Get your high school diploma this year! All classes required for a high school diploma, adult basic education, GED preparation, word processing, driver's education and English as a second language are available. Register now to graduate -- just $35 per semester. The center is located at 76 S. 1000 West, and can be reached at 833-1994. Adult education classes are for students 18 and over.

Take the GED

The GED test will be given on Feb. 12, starting at 8 a.m. Please contact Andrea at 833-1994 by Feb. 8. Pre-registration is required.

English as a second language

ESOL conversational classes are held Monday and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. ESOL students may come anytime, the center is open for individualized study with our software programs and textbooks. Registration is $35 per semester.

Singles luncheon

Tooele Valley singles are invited to attend a lunch and live entertainment sponsored by the Tooele East Stake. It will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 1 p.m., at the Pine Canyon building

Charity

Food pantry

The First Baptist Church in Tooele is offering a clothing closet and emergency food pantry to help meet the needs of our community. Anyone with clothing needs -- adults and children -- are welcome. The food pantry is available for emergency needs. Hours of operation are Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. We are located at 580 S. Main St., Tooele. For more info call 882-2048.

Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife

The Tooele Chapter of the Sportsmen for Fish and Wildlife will have a fund-raiser March 8, at the Deseret Peak Complex. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:30, and an auction at 8. Come join us for a fun casino night, with blackjack, craps and roulette. There will be kids bingo as well. The Tooele City Arts Council is currently enrolling students in community art classes. Classes for February and March include: soap making, woodworking, oil painting, child/parent drawing, adult drawing, ceramics and pottery. Eagles steak night

Family Night

Family Night will be on Feb. 2. Chairman Aletha Wrathall and her family will serve dinner at 6:30 p.m., with bingo to follow. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for kids 12 and under. The public is invited.

Superbowl Sunday

Come to the Eagles on Superbowl Sunday. There will be food, salsa bar and fun before the kickoff. Come up and watch the game on the big screen.

Kiwanis meetings

Domestic Violence Support Aspen Ridge Counseling and the DVSAVA crisis line have begun a new free Domestic Violence Victim Support Group. It is held every Tuesday from 5 to 6 p.m. Daycare is provided. Please call 850-8723 or the crisis line at 882-6888 with any questions and for the location.

Volunteers needed

The Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (DVSAVA) Crisis Line is looking for new volunteer advocates. Training is provided and begins in February. A background check is required. Please call Betsy at 241-0337 for more information and check out our Web site at www.dvsava.org.

Sewing Guild

Tooele Homemakers

The Tooele Homemakers will have their Valentine's meeting this Monday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m., in the auditorium of the newly remodeled Tooele Extension Building, 151 N. Main St. You can park up front. Lonnie Cato, master cake decorator and former owner of All About Cakes store, will be demonstrating and giving us tips on decorating cakes and cookies.
