REEL TALK
'Get Smart' plays off hodgepodge cast to keep audiences laughing to the end
Written by Missy Thompson
6/19/2008

Those who are fans of the TV show may be put off because Carell doesn't play Maxwell as brainlessly as Adams did, even though that's what made the TV series hilarious. The film version is funny simply because Carell is in it and he plays Maxwell just a little bit smarter. Some might say that this isn't the "Get Smart" they were hoping for because Adams isn't in that leading role. I say no one else could have played Maxwell. Carell was the perfect choice.

Shyamalan fails to put in accustomed twist in ‘The Happening’
Written by Missy Thompson
6/17/2008

"The Happening" is Shyamalan's first attempt at an R-rated film. There is no foul language or even suggestive scenes, it's the violence and mass suicides that pushed it from PG-13 to R. He should have taken out some of those scenes of blood and gore, replacing them with cut-away shots where you hear sounds but don't see any violence. That would have made more of an impact suggesting death rather than merely showing it.

The Hulk isn’t as incredible as ‘Iron Man’

Stan Lee is having a terrific summer with the success of “Iron Man” — for which he created the characters — and now the highly anticipated opening of “The Incredible Hulk.”

'Zohan' will satisfy Sandler fans, disappoint others
Written by Missy Thompson
6/10/2008

At first "You Don't Mess with the Zohan" felt like a "Borat" rip-off. Sandler's cheesy accent and filthy language sounded more like Sacha Baron Cohen trying to shock people than anything else. However, I learned after screening the film that the Zohan character was created while Sandler was on the television series "Saturday Night Live."

'Kung Fu Panda' kicks DreamWorks back into the game
Written by Missy Thompson

The casting was definitely spot on. The only way it could have been a little more funny would be if Rogen was cast in the lead role instead of a secondary character. However, Black is always hilarious and there was clearly some ad libbing on the actors' part.

Don't waste any of your money or time getting to know 'The Strangers'
Written by Missy Thompson
5/29/2008

This is the first project for writer/director Bryan Bertino and it looks more like something a 13-year-old would try to make with his friends (think "Son of Rambow"). Everything about "The Strangers" is amateurish. I usually give first-time directors a break, but Bertino doesn't deserve one. He should apologize for making such an awful film.

'Son of Rambow' proves to be an independent delight

If you've already seen the new "Indiana Jones" movie or "Iron Man," this film has some of those same action-adventure moments, but with a little more heart.

Indiana Jones comeback stays true to swashbuckling spirit of original trilogy
Written by Missy Thompson
5/22/2008

When "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" opened in 1989, I was 2 years old. That doesn't mean I'm not an Indy fan. I've seen "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Temple of Doom" and "The Last Crusade." While part of me wishes director Steven Spielberg would have left well enough alone, I'm glad this fourth installment was made so a younger generation could fall in love with Dr. Jones.

'What happens in Vegas...' should stay in Vegas

I liked this movie more than "Made of Honor," probably because I felt so let down by Patrick Dempsey and this type of film is something I would expect from Kutcher. He hasn't done anything really funny since "That '70s Show." Everyone is so used to seeing Diaz in this type of role that if she did anything else, like Jenny Everdeane in "Gangs of New York," people would be shocked.

'Prince Caspian' starts slow but finishes strong
Written by Missy Thompson
5/15/2008

Like the "Harry Potter" series, "The Chronicles of Narnia" shows the progression of children as they grow up and face more adult challenges. In "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," Aslan the lion, (voiced by Liam Neeson) is supposed to represent Jesus Christ. The Christian undertones can definitely be observed in the first film. In "Prince Caspian," however, it is more difficult to determine what message Lewis was trying to get across.

'Speed Racer' crashes and burns right from the start
Written by Missy Thompson
5/8/2008

The cacophony of bright lights the Wachowskis use makes it difficult for one's eyes to keep up with on-screen action. If you are not prepared for it, you're bound to get a headache within the first five minutes. What really hurts "Speed Racer" is that there is too much of this at once. If it was more subtle and spread out it would be easier to handle visually.

'Iron Man' rises above comic-book genre
Written by Missy Thompson
5/6/2008

To go along with the acting, you need the perfect cast in order to pull off a good comic book movie. Tobey Maguire pulls off Spider-Man wonderfully. Now the same can be said of Robert Downey, Jr. playing Tony Stark, or Iron Man. I am so glad he was the one cast in this role. The little intricacies of the character shine through with Downey's own personality.

'Indiana Jones' sets off action-packed summer movie season
Written by Missy Thompson
4/29/2008

It's been 19 years since "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" was released and this fourth installment is certain to gain a lot of new fans, as well as reclaim the old ones. For the last few years, rumors have circulated on whether or not this film would actually be made. Some claimed Ford was too old to play Indiana Jones, which he most certainly is not.

Tina Fey shines in silly comedy 'Baby Mama'
Written by Missy Thompson
4/24/2008

The biggest laughs that this movie gets are ad-libbed lines by Fey and co-star Amy Poehler. All those years working together on "SNL" certainly paid off as they work well together and have a shining friendship that radiates off the screen. If only more ad-libbing had been allowed, "Baby Mama" would be funnier. This film is still entertaining and it might cause some women to want more children, where others -- like me -- want to put off having kids.

Kung fu action not enough to overcome weak story line in "Forbidden Kingdom"
Written by Missy Thompson
4/22/2008

Because the kung fu action sequences are so wonderful to watch, one might think that the rest of "The Forbidden Kingdom" would be just as good. However, the main plot line of an American teen being transported to China where he joins up with martial arts masters, including a lovely young woman, is dreadfully boring.

'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' combines believable romance, side-splitting hilarity
Written by Missy Thompson
4/17/2008

It seems that no matter what type of film someone from Apatow's gang has a hand in, it succeeds. Even "Drillbit Taylor" had a definite Apatow feel. What is brilliant about "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," however, is Segel's honesty in his script. Everything seems natural, nothing is forced and no jokes are out of place. If anyone else had starred in this film, it wouldn't have been the same.

Unlikely ensemble makes 'Smart People' pleasantly surprising
Written by Missy Thompson
4/10/2008

Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Thomas Haden Church and new indie-darling and "Juno" star Ellen Page make up a terrific cast that turn an otherwise dull script into an entertaining film. "Smart People" is definitely character-driven and those characters overpower many of the slow parts of the film. I normally wouldn't think this particular cast would work together in a dramatic film, but they do.

Clooney makes right moves on both sides of camera in '20s-era football flick
Written by Missy Thompson

George Clooney first tried his hand at directing in 2002 with "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind." In 2005, "Good Night, and Good Luck," which he directed, was nominated for six Academy Awards, including achievement in directing and best picture. Now he's behind the camera again in the new film "Leatherheads," in which he also stars.

Light and simple 'Run Fat Boy Run' offers a little something for everyone

I am an avid fan of the long-running television show "Friends." I own all 10 seasons and at least once a day will quote or make a comment about a particular aspect of the show. Because I know just about every episode by heart and the intricacies of the characters, I have a difficult time watching them in other projects.
