Dugway track athletes qualify for state; win region

All 18 members of the Dugway track and field team qualified for the 1A state championship meet this Friday and Saturday at BYU. Both the boys and girls teams from the small school won the Region 18 championship last Wednesday at North Sanpete High School.

Tooele's first singles player Matt Wihongi won three of his four matches at the region tournament last week to qualify for the 4A state tournament this weekend at Liberty Park. He was the only Tooele player to qualify for state.

Cowboys' Parkinson wins region title

Logan edged out Grantsville at the Region 11 tournament last week in Ogden. The Grizzlies claimed the title by scoring 43 points compared to Grantsville's 38. Morgan placed third with 19 points and Ogden was fourth with 18.

Grantsville is still alive in the 3A tournament after losing a nine-inning game and then winning a five-inning game both on Saturday. Wasatch edged the Cowboys 4-3 in the first game and then the Cowboys pounded region foe Ben Lomond 11-1.

With state playoffs just around the corner for Riverton, they must be estatic Tooele is only a 4A team and won't have to see them in the playoffs. The Buffs used an assault of long balls against the Silver Wolves to earn the 8-0 victory on Friday at Deseret Peak Complex.

Grantsville showed up to Cedar City and took care of business like they were suppose to. A first-inning grand slam by Melissa Baird knocked the wind out any thoughts of an upset from Union, cruising to an 8-0 victory.

In their final home game, Tooele didn't play like a team looking for their first Region 7 win. Scoring two first-half goals and then adding another two in the second half, Tooele buried Payson 4-0.

The Tooele High School softball team is ready to prove they are a dynasty team. The Lady Buffs lost to Springville at home last Thursday 4-1 for their only loss in region play. On Tuesday, they made a statement that they are back on track as region leaders by pummeling Provo 12-0 in a five-inning game.
