Summer jobs come with perks, pitfalls and sometimes love
Written by Sarah Miley
6/19/2008

While soaking up rays may not seem like a stressful job, it had its moments, especially when parents wouldn't watch their 2-year-old and he or she would wander into the pool, causing me to have to go in Baywatch-style for a rescue.

Film critic’s job harder than it looks
Written by Missy Thompson
6/12/2008

Being a critic means I need to give my opinion of the movie, but also giving background on some of the actors or the director can help a reader decide if the film is worth their time or money to see. If I see a movie that’s absolutely awful, it’s my job to let readers know why I think it’s terrible. Saying it’s good or bad isn’t enough in most cases. For movies like “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” it’s difficult to review because so many will disagree with the critics. Those 50-50 movies are the hardest to write about.

Blind dating means stumbling in the dark
Written by Doug Radunich
6/5/2008

Unfortunately, it doesn't always work that way. Not to sound like a total pessimist, but some of the experiences I've had recently have made me figure that blind dates work out about as often as you hit a jackpot in Wendover.

Graduation memories fade, but the songs get stuck in your head
Written by Tim Gillie
5/29/2008

Assuming the program was similar, lots of people talked to us grads -- teachers, administrators and students. Then we walked across the stage, shook a lot of hands, got an empty diploma case and sat back down. I know the speakers said something about commencement being a beginning, not an end. I assume graduations today are very similar.

Stories can stand in for memories for families united by Memorial Day
Written by Jamie Belnap
5/22/2008

While in some respects this may be true, I still find cemeteries crowded with what seems like more and more visitors paying their respects.

Nostalgia can take you back, but do you really want to go?
Written by Jeff Barrus
5/15/2008

These days, I often hear people wistfully recall the golden days when Tooele Valley was largely fields and vast tracts of empty land. Some longtime residents talk about moving out to Vernon or Callao to escape the crowds. I don't want to discount those sentiments, and admittedly my memory of the valley only goes back some 30 odd years, but I too remember a time when it was more empty than full -- and it wasn't all that great.

Words might be the most heartfelt gift this Mother's Day
Written by Missy Thompson
5/8/2008

My mom loved this spoon. Scattered around her house are many of the homemade gifts I've given her. After elementary school, teachers no longer set aside special projects for their students. So starting in junior high, I was left with coming up with an idea on my own, buying her a gift or making dinner -- with her help of course.

Spending the stimulus check can divide a household
Written by Sarah Miley
5/1/2008

If it were solely up to me -- which it's not -- I'd take the patio furniture and a vacation. If it were solely up to my husband -- which it's not -- he'd put all of it in the bank. So it looks like we'll compromise.

Despite economic downturn, 'good old days' are really here and now

Sporting options are expanding across Tooele County
Written by Mark Watson
4/17/2008

Covering sports has opened my eyes to a smorgasbord of sporting opportunities that are available for young and old, athlete and fan in Tooele County -- many of which have only come into existence in recent years.

Commuting provides guilty pleasure for city dweller
Written by Doug Radunich
4/10/2008

As some of you may already know from my previous columns, I currently make my home in Salt Lake and commute to Tooele for work at the Transcript-Bulletin. I know what you're all thinking, that with the insanely high price of gas, the 40-minute drive, and the unnecessary racking up of miles on my car, why would I ever want to keep commuting back and forth? If I plan on working here for a while, wouldn't I also eventually get sick of the commute and just want to find an apartment, condo or house somewhere in Tooele County?

The two Tooeles: musings of a man looking out a window
Written by Tim Gillie
4/3/2008

April 1 was not only April Fool's Day. It also marked the sixth month of my employment as a writer here at the Transcript-Bulletin. I don't know for sure if there is a significance to those events occurring at the same time. I'll leave it to you to judge.

Hope springs eternal for amateur gardener
Written by Jeff Barrus
3/27/2008

Last year I wrote a column whose main thesis was that winter wasn't all that bad if you had a game plan to get you through the snowy months. I'd like to take this opportunity to recant those hubristic statements. I was wrong. Winter is better than me. It beat me fair and square this year, repeatedly, over what seemed like 10 months of arctic purgatory.

Spring will always mean baby animals to this suburban farm girl
Written by Sarah Miley
3/20/2008

Easter is on Sunday, and while I may not have specific Easter memories -- aside from the traditional Easter books my parents give out as gifts instead of candy -- I do have memories of bunnies, which are one of the symbols of Easter.

News flash: Spring fever rising to dangerous levels
Written by Jamie Belnap
3/13/2008

Cases of spring fever have risen dramatically in Tooele County in the past few weeks after relatively few cases were reported through the first months of winter.

Winning is easy, if you jump on the right bandwagon
Written by Mark Watson
3/6/2008

On Saturday, I had a couple of reasons to go watch the 4A-5A state basketball championships in Ogden at the Dee Events Center. First, the final game of the day would pit Bountiful vs. Provo in the 4A championship. I really didn't care who won, but I've lived in Bountiful for 14 years and covered the Braves and coach Mike Maxwell. During one of the three years I covered them, Bountiful won a 5A state basketball championship. My favorite quote from coach Maxwell: "Defensively we want to get in their shorts."

To play in a band means to dream big
Written by Doug Radunich
2/28/2008

As many of you probably don't know, I'm a local musician as well as a journalist for the Transcript-Bulletin. I play the drums and the keyboard -- though not at the same time -- for a band based out of Salt Lake City. I like to think of my musicianship as a part-time job, even though I've never actually been paid for a show before, and like many aspiring musicians I often daydream about what it would be like to be a full-time rock star.

Valentine's is a day for defending love, from evil forces of loneliness
Written by Jeff Barrus
2/14/2008

I can see where we're headed and the efficiencies to be gained, but I resolved a long time ago to live an alternative lifestyle, and after almost 18 years of marriage, my wife and I are probably too set in our ways to join the mainstream single majority anyway. We also have two kids, which in America today shoots us well over the average of 2.57 people per household, and way out onto the radical demographic fringe.

Hating winter can become a tradition too

I have boycotted Valentine's Day and winter for that matter.
